Project Management Professional (PMP)® exams to change this March 2018

The Project Management Institute (PMI)® has released the PMBOK Guide 6th edition last 6 September 2017. The PMBOK Guide, an acronym for “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge”, documents the standards and best practices in project management. The PMI updates the PMBOK Guide every four to five years, adapting to the changes in management styles.

In line with the update, PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP)® Exam will be based on the PMBOK® Guide 6th Edition beginning 26 March 2018. Any examinations taken on or before 25 March 2018 will reference the PMBOK® Guide 5th Edition.

The PMBOK® Guide 6th Edition will cover more topics about Agile project management, which has becoming a fast-growing project management methodology.

A new chapter focusing on the role of the project manager has been added. Essential skills in leading projects effectively such as competencies, experience and skills will all be considered.

Time Management, a knowledge area, has now been renamed to “Schedule Management,” and Human Resource Management will now be called “Resource Management.”

Aside from having two knowledge areas renamed, three processes have been added, namely: Manage Project Knowledge, Control Resources, and Implement Risk Responses. The functionality for Close Procurements Process has been combined with the Close Project or Phase Process, thus removing the former in the new PMBOK® Guide . Estimate Activities Resources has also been removed in the list of processes.

It is recommended to get certified before the new exam is launched. It has been reported that the changes in the PMBOK® Guide will make the new exam significantly more difficult than the current exam.
